Madhouse Scramble Not Kind to Herman |

BREAKING NEWS: Herman back at Bowman-Gray this Saturday! |
FiresideRacing.com just learned that Mike Herman, Jr. is planning an unexpected return to Bowman-Gray Stadium this Saturday night. Herman is currently in Loudon, New Hampshire working with Joe Gibbs Racing developmental driver Marc Davis in Friday’s Heluva Good! 125 for the NASCAR Camping World East Series.
Herman was also scheduled to climb atop the spotter’s stand for Doug Coby during Saturday’s New England 100 for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Coby was slated to drive the #40 out of the Preece Racing stables.
However, rain would cancel qualifying for the Modified Tour and the field was set by owner points. The Preece Racing #40 was caught without owner points since their regular driver Ryan Preece is currently behind the wheel of BRE Racing’s Ole Blue #3.
This turn of events has opened the door for Herman to return to North Carolina early and back to Bowman-Gray Stadium. We briefly caught up with Mike by phone as he spoke about Saturday’s plan.
“Logistically it’s tough because I wasn’t scheduled to fly back until Sunday,” said Herman. “But once I knew there was a chance I wasn’t going to spot Saturday’s Modified race I knew I needed to find a way home so I could be back at the Stadium. I don’t get the chance to race as much as I would like, so when I get an extra chance, especially at the Stadium, I’ll be there.”
There’s still a slight chance that things won’t work out logistically for Herman to return but he put the chances at 90% that it would. Work has already begun on the Fireside Hearth & Home #15 Modified to prepare it for the Savage Energy Drink Twin 25’s. So make your plans now to be at Bowman-Gray Stadium Saturday night! Kel's Korner - Blog from 6/21/08 |
FiresideRacing.com introduces you to a new feature titled Kel's Korner. Kel's Korner is a blog written by MHR's Kelli Kent and will recap each race from a fan and team member perspective. Enjoy!
We left MHR in Kannapolis, NC around 8:30am. We were headed north on I-85 to the famed Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC. For once, all we were seeing was blue skies ahead of us. Mother nature hasn’t been good to us this year; so far we have missed 4 races because of rain.
Practice
Practice went well. From what I could tell he was pretty loose in the corners, but he was on old tires. For once I wasn’t keeping times or listening on the radio. This weekend I had a different job. I would be taking video of him during practice. This would not only benefit him to see what the car looked like going around the track, but to give the fans a little video footage to look at. I have to admit; I didn’t do to bad either!
Qualifying
His qualifying lap was 13.439, which landed him 12th. Tim Brown set the Pole at 13.128, which he’s done at every race this year. Tim’s brother Ben, clocked Mike at a 13.27 going into turn 3, but Mike was a little loose off of turn 4 which ruined his shot at a top 5 qualifying run.
For those of you who have never been to Bowman-Gray Stadium, qualifying in the 100-lap races is just the order that you draw a pill for your starting position. After the draw we ended up starting 2nd, sitting beside Junior Miller on the pole. |

(6/21) Herman Nearly Pulls Off Upset of Epic Proportions |
Mike Herman, Jr. nearly pulled off an upset of epic proportions tonight at Bowman-Gray Stadium.
Herman used the BGS Choose Rule and the outside groove to work his way from dead last to first in 34 laps.
Herman cleared eventual race winner Junior Miller going down the backstretch on lap 38, but the lead was short lived for the #15 Fireside Hearth & Home car when Herman got loose in turn 3.
"The car was crazy loose after I got spun on lap 3 or 4," said Herman. "I believe it messed up the rear end in that wreck. The car just wasn't the same after that, so I just feel fortunate that I was able to work my way back up to the outside of Junior. I knew I had him cleared, I just hate it didn't work out. But hey, I put on a show and that's what it is all about."
FiresideRacing.com will have more news soon about tonight's race at Bowman-Gray Stadium.

Junior Miller, who had the preferred inside position on all the restarts, held off all challengers but did have one close call when Mike Herman temporarily got past him on the outside in the 38th lap.
Herman had an advantage on Miller heading down the backstretch, but headed hard into the third turn and spun, enabling Miller to regain the edge.
"The car just got wicked loose on me," said Herman, a spotter for Joe Gibbs Racing who races occasionally at the stadium. "I had him cleared but the car had just been real, real loose in the corner."
Herman said he liked the double-file restart rule for 100-lap races.
"Tonight I did," Herman said. "We had a chance. If I could have pulled off that deal and beat Junior, I might would have picked up some new fans."
Monday NEWS: Junior Miller's victory in Modified race overturned by NASCAR (Click Link for Full Story from the Winston-Salem Journal and journalnow.com)
The following excerpt is from bowmangrayracing.com: (Click Link for Full Story)
...Junior Miller had such a situation on his hands when Mike Herman of Kannapolis pulled to the outside during a restart to challenge Miller for the lead. Herman was holding his own against “The King of the Modifieds” – a feat that is especially difficult from the outside lane. The noise from the crowd could be heard over the cars as Herman came inches from passing Miller. But as Herman pushed hard to get by Miller, he flew too fast into the turn – causing him to almost lose control and spin. Miller stayed in the lead.
